Subsign: First, can you tell us a few things about yourself?
Paul: I’m a Romanian artist based in Dublin, Ireland. I came here right after highschool trying to find my way into the creative industry. After 2-3 years of trying, things started to work out for me and since then I was able to make a living from what I love to do.
Subsign: What was your childhood like? Do you think your childhood experiences have influenced your present creative endeavors?
Paul: My childhood was great. I was born in the countryside in Romania, so I had all the freedom to run around, and experiment. I was helping my dad with all sorts of construction work, building stuff from wood which I guess was the foundation for my creative thinking I use today.
Subsign: What did you want to be as a grown up?
Paul: Growing up I always wanted to play the piano. I was playing songs as a toddler on my mom’s phone keyboard, as each number’s sound corresponded to a musical note. Then I got a piano toy which I was in love with. I wanted to move to the city to study piano when I was around 10 yo, but it was not possible financially. That’s when I started drawing.
Subsign: Do you have a work style? How would you describe it?
Paul: This is something I could never achieve. I like creating projects that follow the same look or style (like Dublin.fx, which the work in this article is part of), but I could never limit my whole career to that. I get bored way too easily.
Subsign: Can you share with us how your creative process works?
Paul: The creative process starts with an idea. I like to find the “plot”, then think about the story that can bring me there visually. In the past I used to be more chaotic, but now I like to storyboard all the frames, decide on the music beforehand, make rough shots to get a better look at how everything flows and just after that I start working on the refined piece.
Subsign: What is your favorite work you have done so far?
Subsign: Who do you follow for inspiration?
Paul: I try to follow as little as possible. There’s no social media apps on my phone, as I always get the tendency to compare my work with other artist’s work, ending up being more discouraged rather than inspired. But I go to the cinema a lot. I always feel an urge to create after watching a good movie.
Subsign: What advice would you give to someone starting out in the creative field of work?
Paul: Keep making stuff. Good, bad, doesn’t matter. You’ll get better eventually. Your biggest enemy is not lack of skill, but lack of practice.
Subsign: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Paul: Learning a new software in a day.
Subsign: Can you recommend a book, a song and a movie, for our readers?
Paul: Not much of a reader so I am not the best person to recommend a book. But here is a song: Little Simz – “Gorilla”. And a movie: “Leave the world behind”.
Subsign: If you could throw any kind of party, what would it be like and what special occasion would you choose?
Paul: Interesting one. Probably a house party in some nice cabin. No special occasion tho, spontaneous parties are the best.
Subsign: What famous people would you invite to the party and why?
Paul: Adele – I think she’d be amazing to party with. And Jack Harlow – I’d like him to perform.
