For both events, the main topic was marketing strategy. As Bogdan and the other speakers engaged with the audience, one thing became increasingly clear: many entrepreneurs and even marketing specialists don’t actually understand what a marketing strategy means in the bigger picture. So let’s talk about it, let’s define it more clearly and explore what really goes into building a good marketing strategy.

What is a marketing strategy?

At its core, a marketing strategy is a plan that aligns a brand’s actions with its long-term goals. It answers questions like: Who are we talking to? What do we stand for? Where do we want to go as a business? A campaign might get you attention for a week, but a strategy makes sure that attention means something over the years.

Without strategy, and we mean a good strategy, a brand could put a lot of effort into marketing, but still end up going nowhere.

A strong marketing strategy isn’t just a collection of campaigns, it’s a roadmap that connects every action to a bigger goal. At a minimum, it should clearly define the following:

– Target audience

– Brand positioning and differentiation

– Core messaging and tone of voice

– Channels and tactics for reaching the audience

– Measurable objectives and KPIs

– Plan for monitoring, adapting, and iterating

– Alignment with long-term brand vision

What is not a marketing strategy? It is not about “selling this much” or “going viral.” Those are KPIs (specific targets, whether financial, social media, or engagement metrics) but hitting them doesn’t automatically mean you have a strategy.

A real strategy goes beyond numbers. It reflects a bigger purpose and incorporates your brand’s vision and long-term objectives. It’s about understanding why you do what you do, who you want to reach, and how every campaign, post, or activation serves a consistent, meaningful goal. Without that bigger picture, even the most successful campaigns risk being short-lived or disconnected from the brand’s true direction.

What should a brand do to have a good marketing strategy?

Building a good marketing strategy starts with clarity. A brand needs to know exactly who it is and what it stands for. This means defining its purpose, values, and unique voice in the market.

Next, a brand needs to understand its audience deeply. Who are the people it wants to reach? What problems do they have, what motivates them, and how do they experience the world? The better a brand knows its audience, the more precise and impactful its messaging can be. This step transforms a strategy from a vague plan into something actionable and measurable.

A good strategy also sets clear objectives and KPIs, but the key is context. The numbers are important, yes, but they should always serve the bigger purpose. For example, increasing engagement is valuable if it strengthens brand loyalty or builds awareness among the right people. Simply chasing likes or impressions without a connection to long-term goals is not a strategy, it’s activity.

Finally, a strong marketing strategy is adaptable. Markets, trends, and audiences evolve, and so should the approach. A brand should continuously monitor results, learn from them, and iterate. This ensures that short-term campaigns don’t just create temporary wins, but contribute to building a brand that grows stronger over time.

Brands that have a good marketing strategy.

Patagonia’s marketing strategy is built around environmental responsibility and activism. They don’t just sell outdoor gear. They communicate a purpose: protecting the planet. Every campaign reinforces this vision, from encouraging customers to repair clothes instead of buying new ones to donating a portion of profits to environmental causes. KPIs here go beyond sales. They track customer loyalty, community engagement, and brand perception as a sustainability leader.

Innocent Drinks (the UK smoothie brand) has a playful, human-centered approach. Their strategy focuses on building a fun, approachable brand personality that connects with everyday life. Their campaigns, social media presence, and packaging all reflect the same tone of voice. Success isn’t measured only in units sold, but in brand recognition, engagement, and trust. People know what Innocent stands for, which makes the brand resilient and memorable.

LEGO’s strategy goes far beyond toys. They position themselves as a creativity and learning brand for all ages. Their marketing connects with parents, educators, and kids alike, emphasizing imagination and problem-solving. LEGO uses campaigns, experiences, and content (like movies and games) that reinforce this vision. KPIs include community engagement, user-generated content, and customer lifetime value, which are metrics that measure how deeply the brand integrates into people’s lives.

Our conclusion.

A marketing strategy is much more than a set of campaigns or a checklist of KPIs. It’s a compass that guides a brand’s actions, ensuring every effort, every message, and every campaign serves a bigger purpose. It connects the brand’s vision with the audience’s needs and turns short-term activity into long-term growth.

We’re here to help you create the marketing strategy your brand truly needs.
